How to Make Layered Ponytails

Give a new twist to a standard style by creating a layered ponytail. Unlike a regular ponytail, in which all the hair is gathered back at once, a layered ponytail divides the hair into sections. By wrapping the sections around your head two at a time, you create a tiered ponytail. This layered look makes the ponytail more elegant, turning it from the province of high-school cheerleaders to a stunning updo ideal for formal events. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your hair from your hairline to just in front of your ears. Comb the hair smooth and secure it on top of your head, near the crown, with an elastic band.

    • 2

Pull a small strand of hair out of the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic until the elastic is hidden. Secure the hair by tucking it into the underside of the elastic or inserting a bobby pin.

    • 3

Pull back the middle section of your hair that runs from the top to the bottom of your ears on the back of your head. Secure it in a ponytail, then wrap the ponytail band with a small piece of hair like you did the first.

    • 4

Pull the remainder of your hair into a ponytail at the nape of your neck. Secure it with a ponytail band and wrap the band with hair.

    • 5

Spritz your style with hairspray to hold it in place.
