Directions for Bending Electrical Pipe

In some locations, such as industrial settings or areas where electrical wires are exposed to the elements, electrical wires are run through hollow pipes, also called conduit. These pipes can be made from a number of different soft metals. The metal pipes can then be bent into the required shapes by means of an electrical pipe bender. The directions for bending electrical pipe are fairly straightforward, and most benders have markings on the tool to help make bending easier. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the angle of bend that you wish to make in the conduit. This will depend on the physical area where the conduit is run. A sharp conduit bend will conserve space, but running wire through the conduit will be more difficult.

    • 2

Measure out the conduit, taking into account the bend and the amount of straight conduit that you want to have after the bend. This will determine the degree of bend that you need in the conduit. Some manufacturers of conduit benders publish tables with their benders to make this measurement easier.

    • 3

Insert the end of the conduit into the socket on the conduit bender. Place the conduit and bender on the floor so that the footrest on the end of the bender is facing upwards.

    • 4

Slowly pull back on the conduit bender handle until the marker for the desired amount of degree bend is parallel with the floor.

    • 5

Pull the conduit out of the bender. Check the fit of the conduit in the desired space. If needed, adjust the conduit bend or start over with a new pipe.

Tips & Warnings

  • When bending, keep the pressure on your conduit handle steady and firm.
