How to Get Hired as a Day Laborer

How to Get Hired as a Day Laborer thumbnail
When times are tough, day labor is an employment option.

Day labor is temporary labor. Temporary labor agencies provide this service to employers who need workers for daily, weekly or monthly projects. Although the labor is often on a day-by-day basis, temporary labor may lead to long-term positions. If the employer likes your performance, he may specifically request you for the next day's labor. Getting hired as a day laborer requires applying at the agency and showing up in the morning for job call. Although not steady employment, temporary day labor pays daily, in cash or a payroll check often cashed by the agency.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact local temporary labor agencies, which you can find in the yellow pages or online. Find the agencies in your area and make a list of the ones you plan to apply to.

    • 2

Call each agency and find the best time to fill out the application paperwork. Temporary agencies often have specific times for new applicants after filling the day's labor orders. Specifically ask what forms of identification are needed to apply. Normally, legal identification proofs such as driver's license, social security card, birth certificate or citizenship paperwork are required.

    • 3

Fill out the application and tax forms. There may be an orientation, giving you an idea of the job types normally called for and what is required. Construction, roofing, loading and warehouse work is common, but there may be opportunities for other types of work, such as catering or office temporary. Be sure to have a resume with any special skills and education you have.

Show up at the agency at the recommended time. Unless looking for workers with special skills, most labor agencies operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Agencies often recommend arriving an hour before the agency opens.
