Instructions

    • 1

Place the Bernina 1008 on a flat, solid work surface. Remove and replace the sewing needle. Check the sewing needle to make sure the flat side of the needle is facing toward the back in the needle clamp. Make sure the needle is for the Bernina 1008, as other needles will not fit correctly.

    • 2

Tighten the handwheel to make sure it is locked in place. The handwheel is on the right side of the sewing machine.

    • 3

Move the handwheel toward you. Watch the needle through its rotation to see if it is striking the pressure plate. Pressure-plate strikes by the needle happen after the needle is bent during the sewing or storing process.

    • 4

Remove the pressure plate with a small Bernina screwdriver. Remove all lint and small pieces of thread in the feed dogs. The feed dogs are the two zigzag-looking pieces of metal that move the material under the needle. Use an artist paintbrush to aide in the removal of the lint and thread.

    • 5

Open the free-arm cover plate. The free-arm cover plate is the door that opens on the left-hand side of the machine just above the needle assembly. Remove any sewing lint or small pieces of thread from the area. Brush the area with an artist paintbrush to help with the removal of lint.

    • 6

Oil the hook race, the mechanical apparatus that moves the needle up and down.

    • 7

Check and remove small pieces of thread caught between the thread tension discs. The thread tension discs are behind the small knob just above and to the right of the needle.

    • 8

Open the bobbin door. Remove the bobbin case. Check and remove small pieces of thread behind the bobbin and in the bobbin casing.

    • 9

Take the Bernina 1008 to an authorized Bernina repair service if the problem still exists.
