Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system. The product has various editions. The Enterprise Edition is the full-fledged version providing SQL Server in its full strength to handle bulkier data in a large enterprise setting. After SQL Server 7.0, the next version--i.e., 8.0--is called SQL Server 2000.

Features

SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition is used as a production-level database server. It provides scalability for good performance on large data and traffic websites, enterprise-level Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) systems and Data Warehousing systems. Thousands of users can access and update the data concurrently without loss of performance.

Modules

The Enterprise Edition of SQL Server 2000 provides support for failover clustering, failover support in the Enterprise Manager, log shipping, enhanced read-ahead and scanning, advanced indexing, graphical utilities for language settings, and full text search. These advanced modules and features are not found in the personal and standard editions.

Windows Versions Supported

With the evolution of Microsoft Windows into the .NET world, SQL Server has also evolved. SQL Server 2000 (8.0) Enterprise Edition supports Windows NT 4.0 server and enterprise, Windows 2000 Server and DataCenter, and flavors of Windows 2003. The 95-XP line, of course, never applied to the enterprise edition. Versions of the Windows operating system higher than 2003 are not supported by SQL Server 2000.

Administrative Tools

The tool "Enterprise Manager" in SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 (8.0) is the older version of "Management Studio" in SQL Server 2005 and higher.
