How to Care for Hair After a Weave Removal

A weave involves attaching hair extensions into natural hair. Various methods are used to attach weaves. Oftentimes, the weave is glued or clipped to the natural hair. Once a weave is removed, the hair is often damaged as a result of the method used to keep the weave in place for so long. It's essential to care for hair quite well after removal, to restore it to a healthy condition.

Trim your ends. Your ends are likely split, broken or otherwise damaged as a result of the weave removal. This damage will creep up the hair shaft if it's not removed.

Use fortifying hair care products. There are shampoos, conditioners and styling products that are designed to strengthen damaged hair. These products are gentler on hair than standard options. Oftentimes, hair is significantly damaged during a weave removal, due to the harsh glues and clips used to attach the weave. Fortifying hair products can restore strength to locks.

Comb hair when it's wet. A wide-toothed comb is gentler on hair than a hairbrush. Since hair is most vulnerable to damage when it is wet, it's important to handle it carefully.

Apply a leave-in conditioner to hair. This will coat the hair shaft, protecting it from damage and breakage. Choose a leave-in conditioner that contains SPF protection to guard against the sun's damaging and drying rays.

Treat hair to a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment weekly. These intense treatments are deeply hydrating, helping to restore and refresh damaged locks. Apply the treatment, cover hair with a plastic bag, and let it remain there for at least 20 minutes before rinsing.

Up your protein intake. Since hair mostly consists of protein, you must consume sufficient protein daily. If you increase your protein consumption, your hair will be shinier and healthier. Find protein in a variety of sources, such as dairy products, meat, nuts and seeds.

Avoid heated styling appliances. Straightening irons, curling irons, hot rollers and blow dryers are all harsh on hair. Since hair is vulnerable after the weave removal, avoid such appliances altogether. Let hair naturally air dry and use foam rollers to curl it.
