How to Mix Stucco Texture

How to Mix Stucco Texture thumbnail
Stucco exteriors have an old fashioned charm.

Stucco texture can add a rough surface, usually to exterior walls. Formulated with cement, mixing stucco is similar to mixing concrete for other home improvement projects. When your project requires a stucco surface, mix stucco texture quickly and carefully before applying it. With careful measuring and mixing, the stucco material will have the proper consistency to create the surface you desire. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Stucco mix (bagged)
  • Wheelbarrow or cement tub
  • Measuring cup (quart size)
  • Hoe or trowel

Instructions

    • 1

Open the stucco mix bag and pour it into the wheelbarrow or cement tub carefully. Mound the dry mix into a hill in the center of the mixing container and then make a crater in the center with your hands.

    • 2

Measure and pour water into the crater in the center of the mix. Use 2.6 quarts of water for a 40 lb. bag, 4 quarts for a 60 lb. bag and 5.3 quarts for an 80 lb. bag. If the weather is cool, use warm water to make the stucco set faster. If the weather is warm, use cold water to make the stucco set more slowly.

    • 3

Mix the stucco mix with the hoe or trowel blade until it resembles a smooth, thick mixture. Add additional water slowly if the mixture is crumbly. Do not make the mixture too watery or the stucco will lack strength and durability.

    • 4

Apply the stucco immediately to the surface before it begins setting. A 40 lb. bag of stucco mix should cover about 35 square feet and a 60 lb. bag should cover 50 square feet of surface.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not mix and apply stucco if the temperature is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit or the stucco may not be strong. If the temperature is below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, you may notice reduced strength.
