The Canon PowerShot G12 has two programmed modes good for fast-moving objects.

If you're using your Canon PowerShot G12 to photograph people, pets or sporting events, chances are your subject is going to be moving. The faster your subject is moving, the more difficult it can be to get a good picture. The trick is choosing the right camera setting, such as a sports mode that uses continuous auto focus and the fastest shutter speed available, to help you deal with changing lighting and focus conditions. Then practice, practice, practice your technique.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an appropriate shooting mode for your subject using the mode dial. The G12 has both a sports and a kids and pets option in its pre-programmed options.

    • 2

Position yourself to get the picture and look at the LCD screen on the back of the camera. Using the zoom lever so the camera lens is at its widest setting. This will help you better position the subject in your frame.

    • 3

Wait for your subject to enter the frame. Depending on how close you area to your subject, you may need to begin moving the camera the same direction as your subject. Take the picture when your subject is positioned in the frame to your liking. Press the shutter button halfway to focus the picture and press it fully as soon as possible to take the picture.

Choose the continuous shooting option to get a series of images as long as you hold down the shutter button. Press the FUNC./SET button and use the up and down directional arrows until you reach the drive mode option, marked on the LCD screen by a rectangle. Use the right and left arrows to select "continuous shooting," marked by a series of rectangles stacked on top of each other.

Try the tracking auto-focus mode, in which you identify the subject and the camera changes its focus as the subject moves around the frame. Find this option in the camera menu. Press the menu button, choose the tab marked with a picture of a camera and navigate to "AF Frame." Use the right and left arrows to choose "Tracking AF."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are not happy with your shutter-speed options, adjust your ISO, or the image sensor's sensitivity to light. Choose a setting of ISO 800 or above using the ISO dial on the G12. Or choose the low-light shooting mode. This may cause your pictures to be grainy, but you will be able to use a faster shutter speed.

  • Create motion blur in your pictures by using a slow shutter speed and panning the camera. Panning means you move the camera in a slow, steady motion the same direction as your subject. The slow shutter speed will cause the background to blur as if it's moving with your subject, which remains in focus. The trick is keeping the subject in the same spot in your frame.
