How to Become a Supermarket Produce Manager
Supermarkets -- like many retail stores -- are managed at the top level by a store manager and various assistant store managers. Most supermarkets also have department-level managers who are in charge of the various sections of the store, including meats, dairy and produce. Supermarket produce managers are tasked with maintaining the inventory and cleanliness of the produce department, as well as making sure the department sells what the customers want.
Instructions

-
1
Earn at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Many grocery stores will only hire employees with at least a high school education.
-
2
Learn principles of retail management through college-level courses. Many produce managers have associate or bachelor's degrees in management. Additional coursework in biology or plant science also helps you understand produce from the inside-out, giving you a competitive advantage over other would-be produce managers.
-
-
3
Gain work experience in a grocery store. Many grocery stores only want produce managers with experience in the grocery business. Ideally, working in the produce department is the best way to gain experience. However, positions in produce are not always available. Instead, working as a stocking clerk is a good way to learn about many different grocery departments, including produce.
-
4
Express interest in advancement opportunities within the produce department. Many grocery stores like to promote from within, rather than hiring from outside the store.
-
5
Apply for open produce manager positions, either in your current grocery store or for a competitor. The turnover for management-level positions at grocery stores is typically lower than entry-level positions, so it is important to jump on opportunities as they come along.
