Many people respect homemade Halloween costumes. Creativity combined with effort show that you have put some time into making a one-of-a-kind disguise. This year, be the luckiest person at the party by creating a unique slot machine costume. You can build the costume in only a couple of hours from recycled materials for under $10. By making your own Halloween costume, you can save money and save the planet too.

Things You'll Need

  • Large cardboard box
  • Black paint
  • Paint brush
  • Craft knife
  • Masking tape
  • Piece of white printer paper
  • Glue
  • Cherry stickers, pictures or drawings
  • 2 LED lights (optional)
  • Long sleeve black top
  • Red glove

Open the top and bottom of the box. Paint the entire box black. This will form the body of your slot machine.

Let the bottom flap open. This will help to improve your maneuverability. Leave the box until the paint is dry.

Orient the box so that the wide front side is facing you. Cut down the two front sides of the box until halfway down the front of the box.

Cut along the bend in the cardboard. Bend the cut piece so that the front is at a 45-degree angle. Tape it to the inside of the box to keep it in place.

Fold the front lid piece over the top of the box. It should stick out over the back of the box.

Cut off the excess cardboard. Trim the excess cardboard off the sides where the front 45-degree-angle piece has left them exposed.

Secure the front of the box to the sides with masking tape. Secure the top lid to the sides and to the back with tape.

Paint all the tape black. Cut a hole in the top of the lid for your head and two holes in the sides for arms.

Orient the sheet of printer paper so that it is landscaped (the long sides are facing toward you and away from you while the short sides are on your left and right). Fold it into three equal parts and cut it into strips.

Paste the three strips on the front of the box (the piece that is at a 45-degree angle). Decorate with cherries other fruit to represent the slots. You can paste stickers, paint them on with paint, printout pictures from the Internet or draw them on the paper with markers.

Buy two LED lights and stick them on the top of the slot machine if you like; these should flash to show that the machine is working. Dress in a black top and wear a red glove on your left hand.

Stick your head out the top and arms out the sides. Ball your left hand and hold your arm up to form the handle of the slot machine.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you would like a more glitzy slot machine, get a red, silver or gold top and paint the box to match.
  • You can wear a black glove on your right hand if you wish. Block tights will also help to make the costume more professional.
