Google Maps offer many more options than traditional maps.

The KML file format stores geographic display information for Google's Earth and Maps applications. Making its debut in Google Earth, KML support was added to the Google Maps API profile in 2010, in its third release. While Google Maps is not used to create or edit KML files, any existing file in the format can be opened using Google Maps. This allows users to view the files without the addition of any software -- other than a browser.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the KML file you want to open on the Internet. Right-click on the link to the KML file. Select "Copy Shortcut" from the menu.

    • 2

Navigate to the "Maps" tab at Google.com. Put your cursor in the search box, and click the left mouse button once.

    • 3

Press "CTRL+V," or right-click and select "Paste," to add the KML file name to the search box.

    • 4

Press "Enter" on your keyboard, or select the blue box that resembles a magnifying glass.

    • 5

Use the on-screen navigation to explore the map and data.
