How to Clamp a Round Wooden Disc

Clamp any round disc with a nylon strap clamp.

Round wooden discs like you might find on certain types of lids, crafts or even picture frames might seem impossible to clamp. Without any flat surfaces, clamps do not work. But if the disc is cracked, broken or split, glue alone is not enough to bond it back together. Special, flexible clamps are made for this purpose. Nylon strap clamps can clamp round, oval or almost any shape by applying even pressure around the perimeter of the object.

Things You'll Need

  • Masking tape
  • Glue
  • Nylon strap clamp
  • 1/2-inch open end wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Place masking tape alongside any cracks or splits. If the disc is completely broken in half, don't use the tape.

    • 2

Inject glue into any cracks or splits. Place glue on the broken edges of any pieces that are separate. Reassemble the disc to its original form.

    • 3

Push a small lever on the side of the strap clamp to release the strap. There is only one lever on the clamp, therefore it's easy to find. Hold the spring loaded lever open and pull the strap out into a circle big enough to fit over the disc. Drop the circle over the disc and release the lever.

    • 4

Tighten the 1/2-inch nut on the clamp with a 1/2-inch open end wrench. Each time you turn the nut, there will be a click. With each click, reposition the wrench and give it another click until glue oozes out all the cracks and it's so tight you can't turn it anymore. Wait 1 hour for the glue to dry before removing the clamp by pushing the lever. Remove the tape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the strap clamp is wrapped around the disc evenly to get even pressure on the perimeter of the disc.

  • Don't use a socket on a strap clamp. You can apply too much pressure causing the disc or the clamp to break.
