How to Make a Perfectly Smooth Canvas
When creating a piece of art, take the time to properly prepare the canvas. Store-bought canvases are quick and easy surfaces for artists to use, but the quality varies greatly. Many canvases come pre-primed, but the rough texture is easily visible. Make professional-looking smooth canvases at home by using gesso application. The process is time-consuming, taking up to a few days depending on drying speed in between coats. The resulting product is a smooth and texture-free surface.

1
Purchase a gallery canvas that does not have staples on the side for a more professional look. Place the stretched canvas on a smooth and flat work surface.
-
2
Stir the gesso with a paint stirrer. Apply a small amount to the canvas and slowly spread the gesso by moving the squeegee from left to right. Carefully coat the entire canvas in a thin layer, moving in the same direction with each stroke.

3
Dry the canvas thoroughly with a hair-dryer on the medium setting to speed up the drying process.
-
4
Rotate the canvas 90 degrees and apply the second coat of gesso. Always move the squeegee in the same direction.
-
5
Repeat the application and drying process up to five times until you cannot see any texture from the original canvas. Rotate the canvas 90 degrees before starting a new layer to ensure even application.
-
6
Allow the canvas to dry for up to 48 hours.
-
7
Use 120 grit sandpaper to carefully smooth away any imperfections in the gesso. Wipe away residue using a damp cloth.
-
8
Repeat the sanding and wiping process three to four times until the canvas is smooth to the touch. Hold the canvas against a light to check for imperfections. Allow to dry completely before using.
