How to Cut Up Shirts Vintage Style
The clothing of the 1980s is now considered vintage, whether the "Thriller" generation likes it or not. Off-the-shoulder T-shirts and sweatshirts experienced a vogue in the '80s thanks to Jennifer Beals' workout wear in "Flashdance." But there were several other ways of cutting up shirts in the '80s, including shredding the bottom half to create fringe. Fringe T-shirts were especially common at the beach, where people wore them as airy swimsuit cover-ups, and at heavy metal concerts, accompanied by giant teased hair.

1
Smooth the T-shirt out on a flat surface. Draw horizontal lines across the front and back of the shirt with tailor's chalk to indicate where you want the fringe to end. Use a ruler to measure the distance from the hem on the front and back of the shirt and as a straight edge when making the lines. Remember that the fringe on '80s shirts tended to come up high, just past the navel.

2
Cut off the neckband, sleeves and bottom hem. When cutting the neckband, cut through only one layer of fabric at a time, and when cutting the sleeves, stop just short of the upper seam to keep from flashing too much skin through the arm holes.

3
Cut four vertical strips up the front of the shirt and four more up the back, then cut the side seams. Stop when you reach the line you drew.
-
4
Cut each section into smaller strips, approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch in width.
-
5
Pull on each strip to curl the edges of the fabric. Machine-wash and dry the shirt to soften the cut edges.
