How to Make a Mad Hatter Outfit

How to Make a Mad Hatter Outfit thumbnail
The Mad Hatter is known for his eccentricities and quirky style.

The Mad Hatter is a feature character Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and the film "Alice in Wonderland." If you are planning to dress in a Mad Hatter outfit for Halloween, attach a ribbon to the brim of an upside-down top hat for a coordinating candy holder. For a Mad Hatter-related event, such as a theatrical play of "Alice in Wonderland," wear the costume along with a grin that screams insanity to go along with the crazed character.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear an orange clown's wig that is wildly curly and poofy.

    • 2

Fold a silk scarf horizontally until it is 3 inches wide. Tie the scarf around the base of the top hat as a hat band so the tail of the scarf hangs to the back of the hat.

    • 3

Write "In this style 10/6" on a 3-by-3-inch white piece of card stock. Insert the bottom corner of the card with the wording facing out in the brim of the hat.

    • 4

Position the hat on top of your wig, pushing the hat onto your head. Allow the hair to stick out from the sides and back of the hat.

    • 5

Dress in a white silk dress shirt that has long sleeves. Pull a men's suit jacket in black, brown or tweed over the silk dress shirt; do not button it up.

    • 6

Tie a silk scarf around your neck into a large bow. Work with the bow to make it as fluffy as possible.

    • 7

Slip on a pair of brightly colored and patterned panty hose or stockings. Wear a pair of suit pants that are pinstriped and preferably too short. Add a pair of brown or black ankle boots that lace up.

    • 8

Paint your face white to give the impression of paleness. Add circles of red blush to the hollows of your cheeks, which are just below your cheekbones, for a feverish appearance.

    • 9

Draw a thin ring of red underneath your eyes so you look sickly. Paint a red line across your eyelids adjacent to your eyelashes. Wear red lipstick on your lips.
