How to Mix a Pearl Glaze

How to Mix a Pearl Glaze thumbnail
A drill with a paddle attachment can also be used to mix the paint.

Pearl glazes are used both as traditional glazes and for faux finish techniques. Pearl glaze can be purchased in its neutral iridescent tone, or it can be bought pretinted. In addition, you can also combine the glaze with paint to create a custom-colored glaze for your project. Commercial glazes of this type dry extremely fast, so a paint extender is recommended for use with glazes. This is especially important when any type of faux finish is being created in order to increase the working time of the paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the paint and pearl glaze into a clean bucket in a ratio of four parts glaze to one part paint.

    • 2

Stir until there are no longer swirls of color in the paint.

    • 3

Add a paint extender such as Flood's Floetrol to the mixture. This will not only extend drying times for the paint, but will also reduce roller and brush marks. Check the packaging instructions on your paint extender, but a general rule is to add 8 oz. of extender per gallon.

    • 4

Stir with the stir stick until well mixed.

Tips & Warnings

  • For best results, base coat the wall in the same color you are tinting the glaze.
