How to Care for a Wool Cowichan Sweater

A Cowichan sweater is a wool sweater handmade in the tradition begun in the Cowichan Valley of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The sweaters are made of raw, untreated wool. The natural lanolin, an oil from the sheep's skin, in the wool makes the sweater very warm, durable and waterproof. If properly cared for, a Cowichan sweater will last for decades. You can wear it in any weather, but you should take great care when washing it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put lukewarm water in a sink or bucket.

    • 2

Mix a small amount of wool soap into the water. Too much soap will remove the lanolin from the wool.

    • 3

Wash the sweater by hand with gentle motions and rinse thoroughly at least two times in lukewarm water.

    • 4

Wring the sweater out by hand gently. You can also press it in a bath towel to dry it further.

    • 5

Lay the sweater flat to dry on the drying rack.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hot water causes wool to shrink. Use water that is a little warmer than room temperature.

  • Too much soap will remove the lanolin from your sweater and it will no longer be waterproof.
