How to Make a Movie Theater Ticket Booth

As movie theaters have changed in appearance over the years, the ticket booth remains a staple feature. A hand-built ticket booth may give a personal touch to a movie theater or playhouse. Wood is an affordable and resilient material for use with outdoor or indoor booths. If you would like to construct your own booth, use a friend to help you.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what size you wish to make the ticket booth. The desk is where the booth attendant will keep the tickets, money and anything else related to tickets. Start with this ticket booth desk and create each of the sections based off its proportions. Lay one piece of the 3/4-inch plywood in front of you and draw a rectangular shape to serve as the desk top.

    • 2

Cut the rectangle out from the plywood sheet by using the circular saw. Move down each of the lines carefully to ensure you have straight and precise lines. Set this piece aside for later use.

    • 3

Position a second plywood sheet on the ground in front of you. Use the width of the booth desk to create the width of this front piece. Draw a rectangle as tall as you want the ticket booth to appear. Remember that most people will need to be able to comfortably reach the top of this booth, therefore keep the height in the 36 to 48-inch range.

    • 4

Create two sides for your ticket booth on alternate sheets of plywood. Use the dimensions for the desktop's depth and the ticket booth's front to sketch out proportional rectangles. Cut these two sides and the front out of each of the plywood sheets with the circular saw.

    • 5

Measure and cut each of the four wooden landscape ties to match the desired height of your ticket booth. Place the desktop plywood cutout in front of you. Set a wooden tie at each corner of the plywood to represent the four legs of your ticket booth. Secure each of the ties with two L-brackets and screws.

    • 6

Attach the front and each side of the ticket booth to the wooden legs. Use screws and the electric drill to secure them into place. Have a friend help you hold up each of these plywood sides to ensure accuracy.

    • 7

Create an overhanging sign above the desktop of your ticket booth. Cut two more wooden landscape ties to about 36 to 48 inches, then attach them with screws onto the front corners of your ticket booth desk. Use L-brackets to secure them into place.

    • 8

Cut a small piece of plywood that runs the length of your ticket booth. The height does not need to be too large, therefore 6 to 10 inches works fine. Screw this board to the top of each of the wooden ties to complete the overhang sign.

    • 9

Paint the ticket booth using the color of your choosing. If you are using multiple colors, paint the main color of your ticket booth first. Let this coat dry, then apply the second color layer. Write "Tickets" or something related across the top of the overhang sign so that people will know what the booth is.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear gloves and protective eyewear when cutting wood. Make sure your circular saw is located in a place where sawdust may easily be cleaned up.
