How to Make an Origami Hershey Kiss

How to Make an Origami Hershey Kiss thumbnail
The Hershey Kiss was invented in 1907.

Hershey Chocolate Company explains that the iconic Hershey Kiss, introduced in 1907, was perhaps named for the sound the factory machines made when depositing the chocolate into small portions. The famous Hershey "plume" sticking out of the Kiss wrapper became a registered trademark in 1924. If you want to make an origami Hershey Kiss you need to link together a large amount of Chinese modular triangles in order to recreate the smooth, 3D rounded shape.

Things You'll Need

  • Long, thin strip of paper
  • Permanent marker
  • 20 sheets 8-by-11.5 inch paper

Instructions

    • 1

Write "HERSHEY'S" on one side of your long, thin strip of paper and "KISSES" on the other side. Set this strip aside.

    • 2

Position your paper so that it is 8 inches tall and 11 1/2 inches wide. Fold it in half horizontally and then fold it in half horizontally again. Unfold the paper.

    • 3

Fold your paper in half vertically and then fold it in half vertically again. Unfold the paper. You should have 32 small rectangles. Cut them out.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 20 times to get 640 small rectangle pieces.

    • 5

Position a rectangle so that it is longest horizontally. Fold it in half horizontally. Fold it in half vertically and unfold this to get a center crease. Fold the bottom-left and bottom-right corners upwards, lining edges up with the center crease to get a triangle shape. Flip over the paper and fold the tips of the upper-right and left corners down and then fold the flaps down so that the triangle piece is solid and compact. Fold the triangle in half.

    • 6

Repeat Step 4 for all small rectangle pieces so that you have 640 Chinese modular triangle units.

    • 7

Link together a chunk of three triangles by inserting the right point of a triangle (A) into the left pocket of another triangle (B) and then inserting the right point of triangle (B) into the left pocket of another triangle (C).

    • 8

Repeat Step 6 41 times so that you have 42 sets of three triangle chunks, using 126 triangles.

    • 9

Link chunks of three together by inserting all the right points of one chunk (A) into all the left pockets of another chunk (B). Continue linking all the chunks together to form one long row of triangles. Connect the row into a circle by linking the ends together.

    • 10

Add on another row of modular triangles by inserting the right point of one triangle in the circle and the left point of another triangle in the circle into each respective pocket of the next layer triangle.

    • 11

Build five rows using the technique in Step 9. You will have ten triangles left over.

    • 12

Loop your fingers around your large ring of connected triangles and squeeze then upward to mold your origami piece into a Hershey Kiss shape. Remember to allow a wider bowl shape at the bottom and taper in the top.

    • 13

Stick your Hershey Kiss paper in through the top center of your origami piece and secure it by squeezing the top together with a small amount of rubber cement.
