Aerobics instructors are in high demand these days.

Aerobics instructors are fitness experts who specialize in aerobic exercise. They often teach group classes but also work as private instructors in some cases. Most aerobics instructors work in fitness clubs, though some teach at their homes or private studios. Aerobics instructors must study human anatomy, nutrition and fitness to develop a well-informed understanding of aerobics and its effects on the body. New Jersey has the same requirements for aerobics instructors as other states.

Instructions

Learn about aerobics by taking classes, attending workshops and watching videos. Do your research and educate yourself on the science behind aerobics, as well as the current trends and practices. Aerobics classes are widely available throughout New Jersey, particularly in big cities like Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth and Trenton.

Get a bachelor's degree in a related field such as physical education or exercise science. In New Jersey, physical education degrees are available at William Paterson University, Montclair State University and Rowan University. The College of New Jersey and Rutgers offer degrees in exercise science. Supplement your education with classes in marketing, public relations and business.

Get certified to teach aerobics through a professional organization such as the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) or American Council on Exercise (ACE). The AFAA offers Primary Group Exercise certification, which requires applicants to attend a workshop and pass a written exam. It covers fitness theory anatomy, exercise evaluation and exercise standards. The ACE's Group Fitness Instructor certification requires that you score at least 63 percent on a 150 multiple-choice exam. These certifications are valid at gyms throughout the state of New Jersey and are often required.
