How to Add Legs to an Ikea Bookcase

Ikea bookcases come in a variety of sizes, and the interior consists of either cubes for storage, or traditional shelves. The bookcases sit on the floor, and you can place the cubed ones horizontally or vertically. Adding legs to an Ikea bookcase will give you a custom look, and will provide extra storage space underneath the shelf. Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • 4 furniture legs with attached screw plates
  • Electric drill
  • 16 1-inch wood screws

      Turn the bookcase upside down or on its side so the bottom faces you. Use a measuring tape to measure 1 inch from the edge in all four corners. Mark the measurement with a pencil.

      Place a furniture leg with an attached screw plate into position in the first corner at the spot you marked. Mark the location of the four screw holes with the pencil. Repeat for the other three corners.

      Drill pilot holes at the marked screw spots using the electric drill. Replace the furniture legs. Screw 1-inch wood screws into each hole in the screw plate and into the pilot hole.

      Repeat with each leg. Turn the bookcase upright.
