How to Alter the H/W Buffer Size

Pro Tools is a multitrack recording and sequencing program developed by Digidesign, which is commonly used by professional and home studio engineers to produce complex audio arrangements. The HW buffer size setting determines how long into the future the computer's hardware is attempting to read audio, and can be accessed from the Playback Engine's settings screen. Configure the H/W buffer size in Pro Tools to configure the software to work optimally with your computer in less than five minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the Pro Tools application. Double-click the desktop icon to open the software's interface if using a PC. Mac users, go to "Applications" and double-click the Pro Tools icon to launch the software.

    • 2

Open the Playback Engine's settings screen. Go to "Setups," "Playback Engine" and wait for the dialog box to appear on your screen. This screen provides Pro Tools users a drop-down list of various H/W buffer size settings from which to choose.

    • 3

Select a lower H/W Buffer Size setting if recording audio, and then click "OK." Lower buffer settings provide less latency, or delay while recording.

    • 4

Select a higher H/W buffer size setting if you are not recording, then click "OK." Mix your track and master it at a higher buffer setting, since latency is not a concern at this stage in production.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may have to experiment with the various H/W buffer size settings to find which ones work out optimally for you, in higher and lower settings.
