How to Do a Page Boy Hairstyle

Those who enjoy old-fashioned hairstyles will appreciate the pageboy hairstyle. The attractive 'do was fashionable in such eras as the 1940s and 1950s. A '40s-style pageboy looks slightly different than one from the '50s; a '40s pageboy is restrained, while the '50s version is more dramatic. Creating either style requires several pieces of equipment and attention to detail, but the retro results are worth the effort. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. 1940s Pageboy

    • 1

Wash your hair the night before you want this look. Part your locks in a way that's normal or habitual for you while your hair is damp.

    • 2

Grab a 1-inch section of your hair at a 90-degree angle to your head. Comb it to make it smooth, then spray the section with setting lotion in a spray bottle.

    • 3

Hold the hair section flat against the scalp with your index finger, then roll the section upward into a stand-up pin curl. Do so by winding the hair in a clockwise direction around the index finger to form a circle.

    • 4

Pin the curl to your scalp by pinning a bobby pin right on top of the curl's base. The pin should be placed slightly off to one side, which makes the curl elevate slightly from the scalp.

    • 5

Roll the rest of your hair in 1-inch sections. You should have two rows of three curls at the back of your head. The side of your head parted with less hair should have two curls. However, the side of your head parted with more hair should have four curls: one curl that faces forward to the front, two other curls at the top of your head and one more just above the ear.

    • 6

Protect your curls with a hair net when you sleep.

    • 7

Take off the hair net the following morning. Take out the curls and pins.

    • 8

Stroke your hair very gently with a brush to reveal the curls' shape. Keep your hair smooth and neat.

    • 9

Nudge the ends of your hair inward by brushing them in that direction while simultaneously shaping them with your free hand.

    • 10

Blow-dry your hair if you're pressed for time. Direct warm air from the dryer downward while you brush the curls for shape.

    • 11

Backcomb the fringes and sides of your curls for additional shape and body. Spritz your hair with shine serum.

    1950s Pageboy

    • 12

Wash and dry your hair. Unlike the preparation for a 1940s style, your hair should not be very damp. You can also create the 1950s pageboy on the same day you want the look.

    • 13

Part your hair into sections that are both 2 inches in width and 2 inches in length. Hold each part in place using a hair clip. There should be four parts in total: one on the front left, one on the front right and two in the back.

    • 14

Lift up one section of hair and spritz it with freeze-hold hairspray. Hold the can or bottle at a distance to the hair; spraying too close or too much can make it hard to brush out later on. Repeat this for the other three parted sections of the hair.

    • 15

Curl the front sections of the hair using a curling iron and curling only the ends of the hair. Wrap each hair section around the iron and curl the ends of the hair inward. Keep the iron clamped around the hair until the hair is warm and until the hairspray no longer feels sticky.

    • 16

Slide the iron from the hair, keeping the curl in the hair perfectly intact. Secure the curl with a section clip.

    • 17

Curl the back hair sections following the same method. Curl the ends of the back left section so that the hair gently curls up and to the left; curl the ends of the back right section so that the hair gently curls up and to the right.

    • 18

Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all of your hair is curled inward and is in section clips. Keep the clips in for at least 15 minutes or longer if you want a more dramatic curl.

    • 19

Remove the section clips and run a boar bristle brush through each section of the hair, simultaneously rolling the hair section over your free hand to direct the hair curl and make it bounce inward.

    • 20

Smooth the hair down with the back of the brush. Spray the back of your hair with freeze-hold spray. Use your fingers to further shape the the curls at the front and on the sides.

Tips & Warnings

  • For the 1950s pageboy style, the parted section to the front right of your face should be curled and clipped for a downward right shape. The front left parted section should be arranged to curl downward to the left.
