Add personality to a plain brick wall with effortlesss picture hanging.

Brick walls add a warm, old-fashioned ambiance to the home, but are nearly impossible to tap small nails into for hanging pictures. Homeowners usually have to drill into brick to hang pictures, portraits and paintings the traditional way with metal, screw-in hooks and wire. This method makes a bit of a mess and leaves behind permanent holes in the brick wall. Whether you simply don't have the time for such a project or your lease terms prohibit you from altering the wall surface, you can still hang pictures on brick without drilling holes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use removable picture hooks to hang pictures weighing 5 lbs. or less. These hooks mount onto hard walls such as brick or concrete with a putty that is easy to remove when it's time to take your picture down or rearrange your wall display.

Use reusable adhesive putty to hang lightweight pictures weighing less than 5 lbs. Adhesive putty is sold in the household section of most stores, near tape and super glue. Pull a 1-inch piece of putty from the package, roll it into a ball between your fingers and apply it to a corner of the back of the picture. Once all four corners have putty in place, position the picture on the wall and firmly press the picture corners to ensure adhesion. The putty will pull off easily and won't leave any sticky residue behind once you remove it.

Use double-sided tape to hang pictures weighing less than 2 lbs. Apply the tape in strips down the back of the picture or lightweight frame and press firmly onto the wall.

Use Velcro with adhesive backing to hang pictures weighing up to 5 lbs. Apply one section of the Velcro to the brick wall and the other section to the picture. Align the sections and firmly press the picture onto the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your picture weighs more than 5 lbs., use another removable picture hook for each additional 5 lbs. to distribute and carry the weight.

  • Adhesive putty comes in different colors. If applying adhesive putty directly to a picture, use a plain white putty without any coloring dyes to avoid staining the picture.

  • Use four strips of Velcro -- one at the top of the picture, one at the bottom of the picture, and two on the wall, spaced the same distance apart as the Velcro strips on the picture. Use a ruler to make sure the strips on the wall will align properly to the ones on the picture.

  • Do not hang pictures heavier than 15 lbs. using these methods.
