How to Make Beaded Fringe for Knitted Scarves
Adding a beaded fringe to a scarf adds movement and weight to the ends. This can be done on a scarf you have knitted yourself, or a scarf that was knitted for you and you received as a gift. No knitting is required for this project. Adding beaded fringe to your knitted scarf should only take about 30 minutes, as long as you know how to single crochet.
Things You'll Need
- Crochet cotton thread, size 10
- Beads wide enough to accommodate thread
- 2.75 mm crochet needle
- Scissors

1
Unwind some of the cotton thread from the skein and string on your beads. Ensure that you have enough beads to complete one side of the scarf.
-
2
Create a slipknot with the end of your cotton thread. Slip it onto the end of your crochet needle. Make a single crochet stitch at the corner of the edge you want to fringe, in the knitted stitch. Slide some beads up the thread, all the way to your needle. It doesn't matter how many beads you use as long as you use the same number of beads each time.

Make another single crochet in the next knitted stitch or row, grabbing the thread after the beads and being careful not to pull the beaded part through the end of the scarf. Continue doing this until you reach the other corner or go all the way around the scarf, depending on your preference.

Cut a tail of 2-3 inches and weave in the ends. Repeat the process for the other edge of the scarf, if desired.

Tips & Warnings
Use thread or yarn that matches your scarf. If the scarf is fine and somewhat delicate, use thinner thread. If the scarf is big and chunky, use thicker yarn and larger beads.
If you need to add beads, unwind a lot of thread from your skein, then cut it. Slide your beads on from the other end. How much thread you need depends on how much you need to crochet. Cut an amount of thread that seems excessive as you can trim the remainder when you're done.
Do not pull the crochet very tight as you go. Doing so will cause the edges of your scarf to warp.
