How to Make a Flap With a Loom

Knitted hats with ear flaps help to keep the ears warm and wind from blowing directly into the ears. This type of hat is easy and fun to make on a round knitting loom. The ear flaps are made prior to attaching them to the brim of the hat. The width of the ear flaps are 5 pegs on the 24 peg loom, 7 pegs on the 31 peg loom, 9 pegs on the 36 peg loom and 11 pegs wide on the 41 peg loom.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the 31 peg round knitting loom on a flat work surface so the pegs are pointing up. Turn the loom so the horizontal peg is pointing toward you. Tie a slipknot in the yarn. Place it over the second peg to the left of the horizontal peg.

    • 2

E-wrap the next two pegs to the left of the slipknot. Turn the knitting loom and E-wrap the same pegs a second time. An E-wrap stitch is made by wrapping the yarn from the back of the peg, around the front, to the peg and over to the next peg.

    • 3

Lift the bottom loop over the top loop. E-wrap the same three pegs. Repeat the process until the 3 peg wide tie is approximately 6 inches long. Adjust the length of the tie from 8 to 12 inches long for larger ear flap hats.

    • 4

E-wrap the three pegs over the stitching and one peg to both the left and right to increase for the ear flap. Pull the bottom loop over the top loop. E-wrap the next row. Repeat the process until the ear flap is 1 1/2 inches long. Adjust the width and length of the ear flap for larger hats. Length varies up to 3 inches long for the largest hat.

    • 5

Cut the yarn approximately 3 inches from the last stitch. Leave the ear flap on the 31 peg knitting loom until needed. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 working the same length ear flap on the right side of the horizontal peg.

    • 6

Place the 24 peg round knitting loom on a flat surface. E-wrap the pegs and complete 10 rows of stitches. Place the first row of stitching over the peg directly above it to create a brim.

    • 7

Carefully remove the first ear flap from the 31 peg round knitting loom. Place the five loops over the first five pegs to the left of the horizontal peg. Carefully remove the second ear flap and place it directly across from the first. This means there will be 7 pegs between the end of the first ear flap and the beginning of the second. Adjust the amount of empty pegs between the ear flaps according to the amount of pegs on the knitting loom.

    • 8

Pull the bottom two loops over the top loop on the pegs with the ear flaps. Pull the bottom loop over the top loop on the pegs without the ear flaps.

    • 9

E-wrap each peg. Complete 12 rows of stitches. Cut the yarn approximately 12 inches from the last stitch. Place the yarn in front of the peg to the left of the horizontal peg. Pull the bottom loop over the yarn. Pull the yarn through the loop. Repeat the process on the remaining pegs.

    • 10

Turn the hat inside out. Pull the yarn tightly to gather the center of the ear flap-knitted hat. Thread the end through the gathering and pull tight. Tie a knot. Cut the yarn approximately 1 inch from the knot. Turn the hat right side out.
