How to Make an Embroidery Nose and Mouth on a Crocheted Toy
Embroidered facial features will add character to a completed crocheted toy. Use six-strand embroidery floss for a satin look or yarn that will blend n with the texture of the toy. Use a blunt crewel needle to prevent split or broken yarn during the embroidery process. The padded satin stitch will allow you to create a nose that will be durable for a toy that a child cuddles and plays with.
Instructions

Mouth and Nose Outline
-
1
Sketch the shape of the nose and mouth that you want to embroider on the crocheted character. Draw a circle, triangle or heart shape for the nose. Make a rounded W-shape for the mouth.
-
2
Thread the needle with a 20-inch to 30-inch piece of six-strand embroidery floss or a piece of yarn. When using yarn, it should be close to the same weight as the original yarn in the toy. Choose a color that will work for the outline of the nose and the mouth.
-
-
3
Insert the needle into the layers of yarn at 1/2 inch from the outermost area of one side of the mouth. Pull the thread or yarn until the end is hidden inside of the face area of the toy.
-
4
Make a back stitch for the outer edge of the mouth. Make the stitch by inserting the needle into the face 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch behind where the yarn comes up through the crocheted fabric. Go down through the face and back up through at 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch in front of the end of the completed stitch. Stitch from right to left.
-
5
Stitch half of the mouth, up around the outline of the nose and finish the other side of the mouth with the back-stitch. Refer to the shape in your guideline drawing. Keep your stitches as even as possible to create a continuous line of stitching without spaces in between. The mouth is complete.
Padded Nose

6
Push the needle through the facial area and bring it out at the back of the toy. Pull the needle from the fiber. Thread the needle with a 30-inch-long piece of embroidery floss or yarn.
-
7
Insert the needle into the back of the toy to come out at the bottom side of the nose area. Pull the yarn through until the end is hidden inside of the toy.
-
8
Bring the needle up to the top side of the nose to make a vertical stitch. Insert the needle at the top of the nose and go under the face fabric to come out at the bottom of the nose next to the first stitch. Continue making these vertical lines until the nose area is filled in.
-
9
Bring the needle up through the crocheted fabric just outside of the embroidered outline. Carry the needle over the width of the nose and insert it into the fabric at the bottom of the nose area to create a horizontal line.
-
10
Stitch over the outline and the vertical lines of fiber until the nose has a double layer of stitches for the padded satin stitch. The stitches should be as even and neat as possible. When finished, push the needle through the toy and out the back. Clip the threads or yarn ends that protrude from the back of the toy. Pull on the toy gently until the ends are pulled into the stuffing.

If the six-strand floss is too bulky, separate two strands from the pieces you embroider with.
