How to Change an IRS Refund to a Paper Check

Your option can be changed after filing.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers three methods of getting your tax refund: a check, direct deposit or purchasing U.S. Series I Savings Bonds. If you file your return selecting a direct deposit but subsequently need to change bank account numbers before the deposit is made, a change in refund method is necessary. However, the IRS won't automatically change the deposit method until the first option is rejected. You won't be able to change the issuance of savings bonds but could instead cash them at a bank and take it as cash.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Explain to the representative that you have concerns about the delivery of your direct deposit.

    • 2

Ask the representative if the deposit has been attempted yet. The IRS has refund information within 72 hours of e-filing receipt or within four weeks of paper filing under most circumstances.

    • 3

Request a check if the deposit was attempted and failed. Confirm your address with the IRS representative to ensure the check gets to you expeditiously.

Tips & Warnings

  • If a paper check is lost, the IRS waits 28 days from the date it was mailed before reissuing a new check. This doesn't apply to direct deposit reissues.
