How to Lock a Netgear Network on Mac

Most Netgear wireless routers ship with an unencrypted wireless network already configured to allow you to connect the network as quickly as possible. Netgear routers include Microsoft Windows-based software to aid in configuring and securing the router, but this software is incompatible with Macintosh computers. You can lock the Netgear wireless network on a Mac through a Web browser. Locking the router prevents unauthorized access to your network unless the wireless password is known.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Macintosh-compatible Web browser, such as Safari.

    • 2

Enter "192.168.1.1" without quotes into the address bar, and then press the "Return" key.

    • 3

Type "admin" without quotes for the user name and password.

    • 4

Click "Wireless Settings" in the left column of the window.

    • 5

Click the desired encryption type under "Security Options." Select "WPAv2" if available.

    • 6

Enter a desired password, and then click "Apply" to save the settings. Currently connected wireless clients must disconnect, and then reconnect using the new password.
