How to Connect a Dlink to Other Routers

You can connect a D-Link brand router to other routers, whether they are manufactured by D-Link or not, by using an Ethernet cable and making sure the internal configuration matches your network setup. For example, numerous routers are configured to use the same internal subnet. Each router requires its own subnet for routing to take place. When you connect a D-Link router to another router, the devices connected to each router are separated and can not see each other, yet they can still access the Internet.

Instructions

  1. Configure Each Router

    • 1

Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the "LAN" ports on the router to an Ethernet port on a computer.

    • 2

Open a Web browser, then type the router's IP address into the address bar. Press Enter. The default D-Link IP address is "192.168.0.1."

    • 3

Enter the router's user name and password, if applicable. The default D-Link user name is "admin" with no password.

    • 4

Go to the router's LAN IP settings and change the third octet to a different number from the rest of the routers. For example, set the first router to "192.168.0.1," and the second router to "192.168.1.1" and so on. Perform the steps in this section individually on each router.

    Connect the Routers

    • 5

Connect one end of an Ethernet cable into one of the "LAN" ports on the D-Link router.

    • 6

Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the "Internet" or "WAN" port of the next router.

    • 7

Connect an Ethernet cable between one of the "LAN" ports on the second router to the "Internet" or "WAN" port on the third router, and so on for each successive router.

    • 8

Connect the end-devices, such as computers and printers, to each desired router with Ethernet cables or wirelessly, if the router supports wireless connections. Each device can communicate with the other devices connected to the same router, but can not interact with devices connected to the other routers. All connected devices can access the Internet across all routers.
