Spruce up a plain space with a vibrant shower curtain.

For a unique bathroom space, you can create your own shower curtain using fleece fabric. Though you'll still need a plastic shower curtain liner to protect the bathroom from water, a fabric curtain can be placed on the outside of the tub for decoration. Sewing your own curtain allows you to customize the space and coordinate with wall, towel and accessory colors, and other bathroom fixtures. Fleece is unexpected in a bathroom but can evoke a cozy feel in an otherwise utilitarian room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the fleece into two or three panels depending on the dimensions of the fabric you have available. The total width and height of all three panels together should equal 88 inches at this point, and will be hemmed to create a 72-by-72-inch shower curtain. Use one or more colors or patterns depending on the rest of the decor and your personal preference. Sew the panels together.

    • 2

Fold the first 4 inches of the top and bottom edge of the curtain back, and iron the fold flat. Fold the edge over once more, another 4 inches, to create a closed seam. Sew across all layers of fabric near the inside fold.

    • 3

Fold the first 4 inches along the vertical edges and iron flat. Fold the edge again, another 2-1/2 inches, covering the rough edge of the fabric with the folded edge. Sew across the inside edge of the fold as you did for the top and bottom edges.

    • 4

Measure across the top hem of the curtain. Mark 12 spots along the hem, the first and last beginning 3 inches from the edge, and the other 10 spaced 6 inches apart. Place a grommet base under the first mark. Put the grommet cutter on top of the base and pound it with a hammer to cut the fabric. Repeat until there are 12 holes across the top hem.

    • 5

Place a front and back grommet on each side of each hole and gently hammer the grommets together.

    • 6

Lay the shower curtain liner over the back of the shower curtain, lining up the holes in the top hem of both layers. Insert a hook through both layers and hang the curtain from the shower rod.
