How to Make Yourself an Asymmetrical Top

Make your shirt less boring with a few snips of the scissors.

A basic top such as a T-shirt is one of the most common and inexpensive articles of clothing in your closet. Wearing too many T-shirts, however, can make your wardrobe look humdrum and require lots of accessorizing. Instead of spending a lot of money on belts and scarves to dress up your T-shirts, you can turn your current tops into entirely new shirts by making them asymmetrical.

Things You'll Need

  • Babydoll T-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Metal ring
  • Needle and thread

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a fitted babydoll T-shirt on a flat surface. Make sure all of the seams are aligned.

    • 2

Remove one of the sleeves, making sure to cut along the seam where the sleeve connects to the body of the shirt.

    • 3

Beginning on the same side, cut the shirt diagonally from the neckline to just below the opposite sleeve. You should now have an asymmetrical tank top with one shoulder strap.

    • 4

Cut across the top seam of the shoulder of the shirt so that you have two identical straps.

    • 5

Wrap one of the straps around one side of the metal ring. Secure if with fabric tape or a pin. Use a needle and thread to create a seam. Wrap the other strap around the opposite side of the metal ring and secure it using the same method as before.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a longer shirt to wear with leggings or as a dress.
