Look for a quilt pattern that uses squares or that has relatively little detail in each quilt block; if there is too much going on in a block, it might distract from the sports pattern of your fabric. Consider if you want only one or many sports to be featured. For example, if you want a baseball quilt, put a baseball applique in each quilt block.

Go shopping for fabric. Think about what sports you want to have in the quilt, and choose fabrics that have a coordinating range. Each sport lends itself to a particular color choice; for example, use red and white for baseball (even blue to represent the sky) or for football, use green to represent the field and brown for the ball. Find one piece of fabric with many colors that you really want to use in the quilt; look at the selvage edge, and you will see colored dots that show you the colors used in that fabric. Find other fabrics that correspond with those colored dots. Use a mix of light, medium and dark prints and find a range of small, medium and large prints. For example, use white, a medium red and a dark blue for a baseball quilt. If you find a print with a bunch of little baseballs through it, use other prints that have medium or large shapes.

A dark blue is an ideal background for a baseball quilt, and the medium red looks attractive as strips around the blue blocks. Follow your pattern instructions for cutting out the pieces for each block. Be precise when cutting your fabric because inaccuracies in your pieces can throw off the balance of the quilt; use a ruler and rotary blade to cut the pieces. Sew the quilt blocks together according to the pattern's instructions. Consider putting appliques in your quilt. For example, accent a plain quilt block with a baseball applique in the center of each block. Put a baseball bat, glove or field in the border.
