This cute, little angel is a great way to use up scrap holiday fabric. Adorn your Christmas tree with several of them.
Things You'll Need
- Doll Hair
- Fine Brushes
- Gold Craft Wire
- Seam Sealant
- Wire-edged Ribbons
- 2-inch Styrofoam Balls
- Acrylic Paints
- Fabric Glue
- Scrap Fabrics
- Sewing Machine
- Sewing Needles
- 1-inch Wooden Balls
- Screw Eyes
Cut a 6 1/4-inch diameter circle out of a piece of shimmery holiday fabric. Apply a seam sealant to the edges of the fabric circle, and let dry.
Use a needle and coordinating thread to make a running stitch 1/8 inch from the edge of the circle. Leave thread ends unknotted.
Center a 2-inch Styrofoam ball on the wrong side of the fabric circle, and pull thread ends so that fabric is gathered around the ball. Knot the thread ends, and trim thread.
Inset a screw eye into the top of a 1-inch diameter wooden ball, and use a fine paintbrush and acrylic paints to apply facial features to the wooden ball.
Glue the wooden head onto the top of the covered Styrofoam ball, and hold in place until glue sets.
Glue doll hair onto the top of the wooden ball. Arrange hair around the screw eye.
Stitch together the short ends of a 1 1/2-inch piece of wire-edged ribbon, right sides together. Stitch 1/4 inch from ribbon edges. Turn the ribbon right side out, and flatten so that the seam is centered.
Sew by hand a running stitch along the ribbon seam through both layers. Leave thread ends unknotted. Pull thread ends so that ribbon is tightly gathered at the center seam. Wrap threads around ribbon center several times and knot. Trim thread ends.
Apply glue to the gathered area of the ribbon, and press wings to the back of the angel, between the body and head. Tie a 6-inch length of narrow ribbon into a bow, and glue bow onto the center of the ribbon to hide thread. You can also apply a similar ribbon under your angel's chin. Trim bow ends as desired.
Form the angel's halo with a piece of gold craft wire. Make a circle with the wire, and then wrap the ends together. Glue the wire ends onto the angel's head, and arrange hair to hide the wire ends.
Thread a 6-inch to 7-inch piece of narrow ribbon through the screw eye. Knot ribbon ends, and hang your angel.
Tips & Warnings
- Use any color fabric to clothe your angels - white, gold and silver fabrics and ribbons look best.
- You can use a sewing machine to stitch the fabric pieces of your angel. The pieces to be sewn are very small, however, and can easily be sewn by hand.
- Do a running stitch by bringing needle up through fabric and then down again and then up again. Take several stitches on your needle before pulling thread all the way through. Keep stitches evenly spaced.
- Stitch the fabric pieces of your angel by bringing needle up from underside of fabric and making a short backstitch. Bring the needle up again one stitch ahead. Put needle in through end of first stitch and out a stitch ahead. Repeat as needed.
- Protect yourself when hand stitching by wearing a thimble.
