Belts are a bit tricky to buy, so shop around to find the perfect belt for either a man or a woman. Remember, a belt can be subtle, or it can make a definite fashion statement.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Try to get an idea of the person's waist size, or plan to buy an adjustable belt.

  2. Step 2

Stick to basics if you are buying for a man. A nice leather belt with a quality buckle - for either a formal or casual look - is probably the best choice. Choose black, brown or tan leather, depending on the kinds of clothes he wears most often.

  3. Step 3

Explore the many options available if you're shopping for a woman. Belts come in leather, metal or materials such as brocade - currently the hottest belt on the market.

  4. Step 4

Choose a belt for a woman that either fits around her waist or hugs her hips. The latter style is currently very hot.

  5. Step 5

Make sure any belt you buy can be exchanged by the recipient.

  6. Step 6

Add accessories such as a wallet, handbag or shoes to match, if you have the money and the inclination.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid buying cloth belts with splashy colors for a man, unless you know he likes and wears them.
  • Expect to pay $25 to $100 for a leather man's belt.
  • Prices on women's belts are all over the map, depending on what you buy, but they tend to be more expensive than men's belts. Prices can run into hundreds of dollars if you're going for top designer looks.
