How to Measure the Perimeter of Acreage
Property boundaries, especially in wooded, rural areas, can be a tricky thing. Neighbors often have disputes over unclear boundaries that are thought to be one place when they're actually in another. Measuring the perimeter of a plot of acreage is not only the way to learn how much linear feet of fence you'll need, it's also a great way to learn the ins and outs of your property -- especially the far-flung border areas you might not see as often. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Determine the property boundary. This information is available at your local records office if you don't have it on hand.
-
2
Walk along one side of your property's perimeter with a distance-measuring wheel. These wheels are rolled in front of someone walking and measure the distance they've traveled -- usually in feet -- and usually have analog displays that show the amount of feet the device has been rolled.
-
-
3
Write down the amount of feet recorded on the distance-measuring wheel.
-
4
Walk along the remaining boundaries of your property and write down the length in feet after completing each side.
-
5
Add together the length of all the sides once you're finished. This number is the total perimeter length of your property.
