How to Crochet a Tutu
A tutu is a single or multiple layered skirt worn most generally as a costume for dancing. The layers are ruffled or look ruffled and protrude from the body. A crocheted tutu is made with a single layer that becomes ruffled with the amount of stitches made in each row. The general directions for a tutu are simple and easy for beginners to understand. Use a sport weight yarn to make the tutu so it looks light and airy.

1
Measure the waist of the individual who will wear the tutu. Multiply the waist measurement by four stitches per inch. Add six extra stitches to create the button loop for attachment. For example, if the waist measurement is 18 inches, 18 x 4 = 72. Add 72 plus 6 for a total of 78 stitches. Chain 78 stitches.
-
2
Single crochet in the seventh chain stitch from the crochet hook. Single crochet in the remaining 71 chain stitches.
-
-
3
Single crochet in each stitch across for a total of 72 stitches. Repeat twice for a total of three rows of single crochet stitches.
-
4
Chain six stitches. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 one more time. There will be a total of three button loops when completed.
-
5
Single crochet twice in each stitch across for a total of 144 stitches.
-
6
Alternate one single crochet, then two single crochet stitches in every other stitch across the row. Repeat this process until the tutu is the desired length. Note: Alternating the stitches will increase the row of stitching by half on each row. This creates the ruffled look of the tutu.

Tips & Warnings
Adjust the amount of ruffle on the crochet tutu. Single crochet in two stitches and then two single crochet stitches in the third. This will make a thinner, ruffled appearance.
