How to Reuse Thread-Forming Screws

Thread-forming screws are often used for plastic and composite materials. They are engineered to provide maximum performance in a wide range of thermoplastics. Thread-forming screws come in various sizes and lengths and provide optimal material flow. The head of these screws comes with a Torx bit. This bit is necessary to install the screws. After the screw is installed, it can easily be removed and reused somewhere else. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a Torx drill bit to a power drill and locate the thread-forming screw you will be removing from its current location. Press the drill bit up against the screw and push it firmly into place.

    • 2

Adjust the drill so it is retracting and press the trigger to begin releasing the screw from its current location. Continue pressing down on the drill until the screw has been removed. Repeat the process for any of the remaining screws that you want to remove from their current locations.

    • 3

Lay all of the screws down on a flat surface and clean them off. Wipe down the area with a clean rag to remove all grease and other dirt that has gotten on the screws. Add dish soap and water to get off the tough spots.

    • 4

Line up the thread-forming screw in its new location and adjust the drill so it is going in and not removing the screws. Attach the head of the screw to the drill bit and push it firmly into place. Tighten it down with the power drill until it is flush with the surface you are installing it into.

    • 5

Install the next thread-forming screw and all of the remaining screws in the exact same manner until they have all been reused.
