How to Sell for Charity
Fundraising, especially if your charity needs a large sum of money, can be an intimidating task. Once you get working, though, you'll find that the sales start coming in. The key to a successful fundraiser is to find items to sell that appeal to your community. Personalized items are popular, as are gift baskets and baked goods. Fundraising can also be a fun way to get to know people in the community and educate them about your cause.

1
Determine your fundraising goal. Find out how much money you need to accomplish your task. If you are raising money for a new playground for a church, for example, research the cost of equipment and ground work before starting your sales.
-
2
Decide what it is you want to sell. There are a myriad of fundraising opportunities for charities. Hold a meeting with those involved in the fundraiser and determine what you could sell that will make you the most money.

3
Determine how long you want to sell something. For example, if you are only holding one fundraiser, you must sell a big-ticket item. However, if you are committed to holding a number of fundraisers, such as bake sales, a flea market and other fundraisers, then you can sell lower-ticket items more often.
-
4
Make or purchase your items for sale. If you are holding a bake sale, get members of the group to make up the products you will sell. If you are holding a barbecue, try and get area businesses to donate the supplies you need, such as condiments, meats and bread. Otherwise, you must purchase those items.
-
5
Obtain your flyers, brochures or other ordering materials. If you are selling products from a large company, such as candles or wrapping paper, get the sales materials from the company and then approach your family and friends about making a purchase. Fundraising companies specialize in these types of sales and split the profits with the charity doing the work.
-
6
Sell items on auction websites or hold a rummage sale. Used items sell well. Get people in your town to donate their unused items for charity and then resell them to make money. This gives people in your area a way to contribute to your cause without needing cash and gives you a way to make a significant amount of money quickly.

7
Promote your fundraisers. Talk to your local newspaper and radio station and ask them to alert people to your sale. Write a press release with all of the details and send it in to them. Ask local businesses if you can put posters up promoting your charity sale. Place flyers on community bulletin boards and let family and friends know to spread the word.
