How to Move Fonts in GIMP

You can install fonts onto your computer and use them in the graphic design program GIMP. GIMP uses the same "Fontconfig" that your computer library uses, meaning once you have installed a font to your computer and have refreshed GIMP, the font will automatically appear within your font list in GIMP. You need not access a separate directory specific to GIMP to move your font into GIMP.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the font you want to use and save it your documents. Typically, downloading a font will download a compressed or zipped folder containing a TrueType font file, possibly in conjunction with a ".txt" file explaining the author's terms of usage for the font.

    • 2

Select the downloaded folder within the "My Documents" view and right-click on the icon. Click on "Extract All" to convert the file into an accessible version.

    • 3

Right-click on the extracted TrueType file and select "Install." The installation will take place, automatically sending the font to the computer's Fontconfig library.

    • 4

Launch GIMP if you do not already have the program open and the font list will automatically be refreshed. Otherwise, click on the "Text Tool" located in the main toolbox. The Font settings icon will appear in the bottom half of the toolbox; click on it and then on the "Open font selection dialog." At the bottom of the dialog, click on on the "Refresh" icon to synchronize GIMP's list of your computer's fonts. Exit the dialog by clicking on the red "X" at the top of the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the Refresh tool within the Fonts Dialog is having trouble, simply close the entire GIMP software and launch it once again.

  • Remember to only download files and fonts from reputable sites you trust.
