Kitchens come in all shapes and sizes and, in some instances, can be rather tight to work in. Other times the layout of your kitchen might be problematic, having, perhaps, a refrigerator that juts up against a counter and prevents full swing of the door. Fortunately, it is possible to alleviate some of these issues by moving the door for your Bosch refrigerator and freezer from one side to the other. If you take this project on yourself, however, be sure you truly know what you are doing.

Important Safety Considerations

Video of the Day

Any changes made to a major appliance in your home should be done with great caution. You should never tinker with your Bosch refrigerator while it is still plugged in. To be on the safe side, unplug the appliance and then turn power off at the circuit breaker to be sure that the unit is not live.

If you need to pull the refrigerator away from a wall or counter to access the door, request the help of another able-bodied adult. Refrigerators are very heavy and could tip; you could also injure yourself by attempting to move the unit on your own. If you have children or pets, make sure they are occupied elsewhere during the repair process. Remove all food from the refrigerator or freezer if you plan to have the unit unplugged for a prolonged period of time during the door-change process.

Lastly, if you do not have a Bosch refrigerator that has a refrigerator on top and freezer on the bottom, or vice versa, you will not be able to reverse the doors. Side-by-side or French door models do not have this feature.

Moving a Refrigerator Door

Changing doors on a Bosch fridge or freezer is a fairly straightforward process. You will first need to locate the hardware that holds the door in place. For most units, this will be a series of hinges that are held in place with screws, according to a how-to from Epicurious. Remove the screws and the hinges and place them in a zip-top bag or in another secure location for the time being.

Lift the refrigerator or freezer door off the pin that was holding it in place. Set the door aside. Then, locate the holes that are on the opposite side of the appliance. You will now need to attach the hinges and pins to the other side.

Reinsert the pins and then hang the door back on the appliance. Get assistance from another adult to push the appliance back into place. Then, plug the refrigerator back in and restore power at the breaker box. Your Bosch refrigerator and freezer should turn back on now.
