How to Make a Spaceship Hull Texture in Maya

Computer generated imagery has become a mainstay of modern cinema and video games. Without 3D models, none of these images could be produced. The models themselves have a number of facets, including the shape, size and purpose. Central to making a model appear real is the texture applied to it. Maya is one of the major players in the 3D modeling world, and Maya produced content is seen throughout the gaming and entertainment industry. One area where Maya is a bit lacking is in the direct creation of textures for models. For example, people wanting to create a texture for a spaceship hull will usually export the Uvmap from Maya and paint it in Photoshop.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the Maya application. Select "File" from the menu at the top and click "Open." In the dialog, browse to and open a model you already have a Uvmap applied to.

    • 2

Select the model in the view. Click on the "UV Texture Editor." This will open the view of the UV map of the model. Click on "Polygon" and then click "Snapshot." A dialog will pop up.

    • 3

Name the file. Make the size at least 512-by-512, although it is better if it is twice that size. Make the file a PNG and click "OK."

    • 4

Start the Photoshop application. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog that appears, browse to and open the PNG file you saved.

    • 5

Use the painting tools and functions of Photoshop to create your texture. For example, use the "Paintbucket" tool to fill a series of overlapping selections with varying shades of gray. Use the "Lighting Effects" under "Filters" to give it a metallic sheen. Save your work for importing back into Maya.
