How to Do the Punk Braid
Watch any pop-culture movie from the 1980's and you'll see at least one teen or twenty-something sporting the classic punk-look. Started in the late 1970's, one could apply the punk style to clothing, shoes, hair and makeup.Today, in 2011, punk hairstyles maintain an angular, often asymmetrical, appearance by pairing alternate hairstyles, such as a braid or ponytail, alongside a set of orange gelled spikes. Like the genre itself, a punk braid follows general guidelines, rather than a single correct technique. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need

1
Wet or wash your hair with shampoo. Wet hair is easier to section-off for making your punk braid.
-
2
Comb out and separate the hair you intend to braid using a fine-toothed comb. Gather a section of hair approximately 4- or 5-inches wide; so your braid doesn't resemble a lone cornrow. Choose a braid location that won't interfere with the rest of your hairstyle or vision, like above or behind your ear.

-
3
Clip-up the remainder of your hair, so you can focus exclusively on your punk braid without interference.
-
4
Divide the section of hair designated for braiding into three equal sections, A, B and C. Spray the entire length of section A with colored hairspray and let it dry.
-
5
Overlap A over B -- C over A -- and B over C, pulling the hair taunt after each overlap. Continue braiding down -- until only a few inches of unbraided hair remains.
-
6
Wrap a non-rubber hair elastic around the tail of your punk braid at least twice, to keep it from falling out.
-
7
Flip your head upside-down and run a quarter-sized dollop of gel through the remainder of loose hair. Punk hairstyles are easier to execute when your hair is stiff and malleable.
-
8
Style your gelled hair in any number of punk styles, while letting your multicolored braid hang down.

Tips & Warnings
Wash and comb your braided hair out thoroughly afterward, as colored hairspray creates sticky locks and nasty tangles.
