How to Make a Slouchy Beret

A beret hat is a classic form that has remained stylish throughout the years. Its timeless style can be slightly altered and still result in a beautiful hat. One way to change a classic beret is to make its shape into a more slouchy style. With a bit more knitting, any avid knitter can create this variation on a classic piece of winter wear.

Things You'll Need

  • Wool, 216 yards
  • Size 10 double-pointed needles
  • Stitch marker
  • Size 11 circular needles
  • Cable needle
  • Scissors

Instructions

      Cast 72 stitches onto the size 10 needle. Divide the stitches so that there are 18 stitches on each double-pointed needle. Join in the round, and place a marker. Knit one stitch and purl one stitch in an alternating pattern for rounds one through five. Change your needles, and begin working with the size 11 circular ones.

      Knit rounds six through 10. Move three stitches onto the cable needle from the beginning of row 11. Knit three more stitches, then knit the stitches on the cable needle and hold them to the back. Repeat the pattern to the end of the round. Knit rounds 12 through 16. Knit three stitches at the beginning of round 17. Place three stitches onto the cable needle, and hold them to the front. Knit three stitches, then knit the three stitches on the cable needle. Repeat the pattern to the end of the row. Knit round 18. Repeat this process once.

      Knit two stitches, then make one new stitch. Alternate the pattern until the end of round 19.

      Knit two rounds. Move three stitches onto the cable needle from the beginning of row 22. Knit three more stitches, then knit the stitches on the cable needle and hold them to the back. Repeat the pattern to the end of the round. Knit rounds 23 through 27. Knit three stitches at the beginning of round 28. Place three stitches onto the cable needle, and hold them to the front. Knit three stitches, then knit the three stitches on the cable needle. Repeat the pattern to the end of the row. Knit round 29.

      Knit the next four rounds. At the beginning of the next round, move three stitches onto the cable needle. Knit three more stitches, then knit the stitches on the cable needle and hold them to the back. Repeat the pattern to the end of the round. Knit the next round. In the next round, repeat the pattern of knitting six stitches, then knitting two together. Knit six more stitches, then slip-slip knit one stitch. Repeat to the end of the round.

      Repeat the pattern of knitting five stitches, then knitting two stitches together in the next round. Knit six more stitches, then slip-slip knit one stitch. Repeat. In the next round, knit three stitches, then place three stitches onto the cable needle and hold them to the front. Knit three stitches, then knit the three on the cable needle. Repeat.

      Knit 10 stitches, then knit two stitches together in an alternating pattern. Continue the pattern in the following rounds, decreasing the number of knit stitches by one in each round. Stop once there are no more stitches to knit before needing to knit two stitches together. Cut the yarn long enough to weave through the remaining stitches. Pull tightly and weave in the ends.
