How to Make Cork Headboards

How to Make Cork Headboards thumbnail
A cork-covered board is like a blank canvas -- decorate however you want.

A headboard gives a clear aesthetic value to a bed. However, not every bed comes with a headboard. While you technically can sleep without one, the absence of a headboard makes your bed seem really plain. Luckily, you don't have to run out and buy a headboard from the nearest furniture store -- they're a simple item to make. A cork headboard is cheap, lightweight, easy to mount and decorate and makes your headboard have a dual function as a "to-do" board. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your mattress. Assess the wall behind your bed and decide how high you want your headboard to go. Mark this height with a piece of chalk and measure it. Write down the measurement.

    • 2

Visit an art supply or craft store and purchase a sheet of cork that is at least as big as your dimensions. The cork should have a laminated back for stability.

    • 3

Draw the shape of the headboard you want on your corkboard with a piece of chalk. For example, you might want a rounded top or a square top or a jagged, erratic shape. It's up to you. Once satisfied, cut out your drawing with a handheld saw.

    • 4

Lay a drop cloth over your work surface and paint your corkboard with an oil-based paint in the color of your choice. Allow it to dry overnight.

    • 5

Attach stencils to the corkboard with painter's tape and spray them on with an oil-based spray paint. Allow them to air dry overnight.

    • 6

Mount the headboard over your bed with a handheld drill and screws, inserting screws into the four corners of the board. Use 6-gauge screws 1 1/4 inches in length. Round or flat head screws are both okay.
