How to Build Cognitive Skills in Kids
Cognitive skills are an important part of a child's development. Learning to solve problems within a group or alone is vital to overcoming obstacles both large and small. Build cognitive skills in your child by performing different tasks with her that compel her to think logically and use reasoning. Select activities that are enjoyable and educational to help her tackle situations with confidence.

1
Offer your child toys that compel her to use logical thinking at a young age, such as stacking ring toys or building blocks. Stacking toys and building blocks require a child to place each piece together in a specific order to obtain a favorable outcome. Logic skills are required to ensure each piece stays in place and fits well.

2
Allow children to socialize with others to solve problems faced within a social circle. Enroll a small child in a local program or set up play dates to allow him to interact with other children his age. He will learn to share and strategize with others to approach situations in an effective manner.

3
Repeat tasks and activities with your child to improve her memory and build on reasoning skills. Tasks and activities, such as making her bed each morning and completing the same puzzle more than once, require her to recall the steps taken to complete the task.

4
Create stories or songs that rhyme on a sheet of paper to strengthen a child's thought process. Ask him to select a word that rhymes with the last word in each sentence of the song or story. Instruct him to read the text once. Then have him recite the song or story without referring to the sheet, making him recall what he read.

5
Play games that expand a child's imagination. Games like imaginary school allow children to associate a job with specific tasks performed, such as teaching other students. Guessing games, such as charades, also help kids use thinking, logic and reasoning skills while being entertained.
