How to Send a 1040X to the IRS

Internal Revenue Service Form 1040X replaces an earlier tax return you sent to the agency. You use the 1040X to correct errors on a previous return or to add new information. For example, you may have forgotten to report income from a second job, or may not have submitted information for a new tax break. The IRS requires a separate 1040X for each tax return you are amending, along with supporting documents, if applicable. The agency reports that it processes 1040X forms in eight to 12 weeks.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a copy of form 1040X from IRS.gov (see link in Resources).

    • 2

Gather copies of the tax returns you wish to amend with the 1040X. The IRS reports in 2011 that Form 1040X corrects these forms: 1040, 1040EZ, 1040A, 1040NR-EZ and 1040NR-EZ. Confirm that the tax return you wish to amend is on that list.

    • 3

Fill out Form 1040X according to instructions included with the form. Enter the same information as on your previous return except for information you wish to correct or add. Do not calculate interest or penalties with your changes. The IRS reports that it will calculate interest or penalties after receiving your form.

    • 4

Complete a separate form for each tax year you are amending.

    • 5

Mail the return to the address listed on any notice received from the IRS requesting you submit the 1040X. Alternatively, contact the IRS for the proper address by calling 800-829-1040.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consult a tax adviser if your return is complex. This will allow you to avoid making more mistakes or omissions.
