Children often have tender scalps, which makes caring for dry and coarse hair a challenge for parents. Instructions

    • 1

Wash the hair with a moisturizing shampoo made for children. Moisturizing shampoos have emollients and botanicals that lubricate the hair and children's shampoos have ingredients that don't irritate or sting the eyes. Apply a quarter-sized amount of the shampoo to wet hair and massage in. Rinse out completely with cool water.

    • 2

Condition hair with a moisturizing conditioner. Apply enough conditioner to saturate the hair. Leave it in for up to five minutes. Rinse out with cool water.

    • 3

Apply a deep conditioner. Coconut oil is one option for at-home deep conditioning. Warm up small amounts of coconut oil between the palms of your hands and then apply it to your daughter's hair. Put on a shower cap or wrap a towel around her head to retain the heat. Leave the coconut oil on for 20 minutes to one hour, then shampoo and condition the hair as usual. Deep condition once a week.

    • 4

Comb through wet hair with a wide-toothed comb to remove tangles (it is easier to comb through coarse hair when it is wet). Start combing at the ends of the hair and move up the hair strands.

    • 5

Towel dry the hair or let the hair air dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you must use a blow-dryer to dry your daughter's hair, apply a heat-protecting lotion to the hair first, then blow-dry on the lowest setting.

  • Do not wash hair on a daily basis, as this will only dry the hair out more. Instead, wash the hair once or twice a week as needed.
