It is not uncommon for commercially produced beauty products to contain chemicals that are not necessarily good for your health. Ingredients in some lip balms can literally be poisonous. While you can find organic and nontoxic products for purchase, making a ChapStick substitute at home allows you to be in control of the ingredients and ensure that it is safe. Color and fragrance can be added to homemade lip balm using nontoxic and natural ingredients. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2 tbsp. beeswax
  • Crayon shavings (optional)
  • 2 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp. shea butter
  • 12 ChapStick or other lip balm tubes
  • Dropper

Instructions

      Melt the beeswax in a double boiler. Add a pinch of nontoxic crayon shavings to add a tint of color.

      Add the shea butter and coconut oil in the double boiler and stir until the mixture is completely melted. At this point add a drop of an essential oil for scent.

      Draw the liquid into the dropper and transfer it to the ChapStick or lip balm tubes.

      Cool the tubes in the refrigerator to solidify.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may substitute shea butter with other butters like cocoa butter or mango butter.

  • You may substitute coconut oil with oils like grape seed oil, almond oil or apricot oil.

  • You may substitute beeswax with soy wax if desired
