How to Make a Wire Spider Web

Look at pictures of real spiderwebs for inspiration.

If you're decorating for Halloween or seeking an arachnid-inspired addition to your home decor, creating a spiderweb from wire is a fairly easy project you can make at home. Similarly to how a spider uses its silk to weave, you will use a craft wire to design your own spiderweb. When its finished, display your wire spiderweb on a shelf, hang it from the ceiling or use it as a festive and frightful decoration hung on your front door.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three 24-gauge craft wires to 12 inches long each, using wire cutters.

    • 2

Hold two of the cut wires together so they make an X shape. Twist the top right wire downward; rotate it over the center of the X. Twist the wire back upward to its original position, leaving a tight loop around the center of the web. Repeat this step with the top left end of the wires. The X will now hold itself together.

    • 3

Place the third wire vertically through the center of the X. Bring the top end downward and wrap it in one loop around the center of the X. Move it back to its original position. You will now have the six spokes of the base of the spiderweb.

    • 4

Cut a 16-inch long piece of craft wire. Use a pair of pliers to bend a small hook at one end. This hook should be only slightly bigger than the width of the wire. Attach the hook around one of the web's spokes, right next to the center of the web. Pinch the hook closed with the pliers. This is the wire you will use to build the spiral of the web.

    • 5

Move the wire upward toward the next spoke of the web. This should be done at a slight angle that moves toward the outside of the web. Wrap the wire in one complete rotation around the spoke, creating a tight loop around the straight wire. Repeat this process to move this wire at a slight angle toward the next spoke in the spiderweb and wrapping it around it before moving on to the next.

    • 6

Repeat Step 5 until the wire ends. When the wire runs out, create a small hook at the end of the wire, attach it to the nearest spoke and pinch it in place. Hook and pinch another 16-inch wire directly above the last wire and continue wrapping the spiral of the web. Continue the spiral process until you make a spiral around the outermost edge of the spiderweb. Hook and pinch the end of the spiral wire in place along the nearest spoke wire.

Use the pliers to bend the ends of the six spoke wires downward over the spiral wire. Pinch them in place to complete the wire spiderweb.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cover the wire web with silver or white spray paint. Or stretch a cotton ball across each wire to add an additional texture to the creation.
